Why would I want a Content Management System?

You may have heard CMSes derided as "blogging software" and been told that they're unnecessary. The truth, however, is that blogging is only a tiny portion of what a Content Management System can do. Some content systems are targeted at the needs of small businesses, Concrete5, for example (which is what we're using here as a demonstration of its capacities). Even something like WordPress, despite its beginnings as a blogging platform, can be customized to meet the needs of small businesses (in fact, we've used it for two of our small businesses customers).

From a business standpoint, and especially for small businesses, CMSes are a money saving tool. They allow you to properly divide the labor of maintaining a website between the design/administrative work that you hire people like us for, and the mere content updates.

A good content system will allow you to make your own content changes, without having to hire someone every time you need to make a change, or worse still, having to maintain someone on payroll to watch over the site full time.

Companies looking for a more full featured site for diverse content (entertainment based businesses, for example) could benefit from a CMS like Joomla or Drupal, with their ability to integrate bulletin boards, blogs, mailing lists, and event management under a single umbrella.

Do you guys only do CMS work?

No. If you look at the old i-Ville site you'll see that it's governed by a simple PHP script. If you want a site in pure XHTML & CSS we're more than capable of building it for you.
